Gavin King
Hibernate


Gavin King is the founder of the Hibernate project, the most popular ORM implementation for Java. He is co-author of a forthcoming Manning book, Object Relational Persistence in Java. Gavin lives in Melbourne, Australia, where he has been working as a J2EE consultant for several years, evangelizing open source solutions and agile methodology. He currently works for Expert IS.

Key topics: The Problem of Persistence. Why and when to use ORM. The Object Relational Mapping Problems. Hibernate concepts. Using Hibernate. Persistence Architectures. Hibernate, DAO and Inversion of Control. If there is time: why not Entity Beans?

Discuss the problem of object persistence and why and when to use automated object/relational mapping (ORM). Introduce the basic mapping problems and mention some standard solutions. Discuss the concepts that make Hibernate different from other solutions and show some simple examples of Hibernate code, emphasising these concepts. Briefly describe some possible persistence architectures, finally emphasizing the combination of ORM, the DAO pattern and Inversion of Control.
